No. 17: Queen of Hearts, “Shoot the Bullet”
No. 18: Nicola Roberts, “Beat of My Drum”
No. 19: Mylène Farmer, “Du Temps”
No. 20: Nicole Scherzinger, “Don’t Hold Your Breath”
I usually just post this list as a status update but I’ve decided to blog it this time so I could elaborate on each album a little more. As always, this is just my opinion… but you should know that my opinion is better than anyone else’s when it comes to music. :)
No. 1: Lady Gaga, “Born This Way”
Once in a while, you come across an album that has everything. Killer hooks, monstrous beats, an arena sized ballad and of course, a lot of ass shaking in between. 2011’s Best Album goes to Born This Way. Was there really any doubt? This album commanded the number one spot. From the lead off disco-dance infused single “Born This Way” to the cool metal-dance track “Electric Chapel”, the album displays so many genres, it’s hard to keep up at times. This is definitely an “album” and not a “singles record” like so many other albums out there right now… Katy Perry, I’m looking at you!
Standout tracks: Born This Way/Heavy Metal Lover/The Edge of Glory/Government Hooker/Sheisse/Electric Chapel
No. 2: Florence + the Machone, “Ceremonials”
Florence + the Machine followed up her massively successful debut album “Lungs” with an album full of witchcraft and wizardry… wait, that’s Harry Potter. But Ceremonials has it’s fair share of mysticism and ritualistic lyrics woven deep within the beautiful tapestry that is Florence Welch’s voice.
Standout tracks: No Light, No Light/What the Water Gave Me/Shake It Out/Spectrum/Bedroom Hymns
No. 3: Natalia Kills, “Perfectionist”
Natalia Kills’ “Perfectionist” is one of the best debut albums I’ve ever heard. The album has so many songs which have “hit” written all over them yet none of these songs ever really charted. Will Natalia Kills fade away into the musical abyss or will she be the next “LMFAO” and come back with a record full of number 1’s that people can’t stop playing? I personally hope it’s the latter with Kills’ signature sound. It’s safe to say that Mirrors would have been a number 1 for weeks and weeks if Rihanna recorded it. Another sad but true American billboard chart story.
Standout tracks: Mirrors/Wonderland/Love Is A Suicide/Nothing Lasts Forever/Not In Love/Kill My Boyfriend
No. 4: Kids of 88, “Sugarpills”
Jordan Arts and Sam McCarthy come to us from New Zealand and make up the New Wave-ish duo “Kids of 88.” Kids of 88 have the same kind of sound as Ladyhawke, who, oddly enough; comes to us from New Zealand as well. Sugarpills swings back and forth from a harsh percussion driven track like “Feed the Birds” to the glam rock sound of “Just A Little Bit” which sounds just a little bit (no pun intended) like Goldrapp’s “Ooh La La” and Normal Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky” to the slow tempo ethno-driven track “Home” and back around again.
Standout tracks: Just A Little Bit/Ribbons of Light/Home/San Fran
No. 5: Hard-Fi, “Killer Sounds”
The album art for Hard-Fi’s album “Killer Sounds” features the famous Dia De Los Muerto’s skulls. This fits the songs and the album title perfectly. Yes, the album does contain it’s fair share of killer sounds but there is a sugar coated layer around it which is not incredibly sweet. It’s just there to balance the taste, so to speak. For example, “Feels Good” has an “would be Bhangra if it had the drums in it” sound layered over a quite dancey guitar driven progression. This song is a total hair shaker, not an ass shaker. It makes you want to mess up your hair and stand around a bunch of sweaty concert goers while simultaneously getting the urge to dance. No small task, let me tell you. All of the songs on Killer Sounds represent the album title and cover so well… they are ferocious, but there’s a sense of color to it all which lightens them ever so slightly.
Standout tracks: Feels Good/Fire in the House/Give It Up/Sweat
No. 6: The Sound of Arrows, “Voyage”
Swedish electronic duo “The Sound of Arrows” released one of the most beautifully sounding electronic records ever, in my opinion. It’s hard to make electronic music sound emotional, but they did it. The music for their epic 7:51 long track “There Is Still Hope” is undeniably poignant. The album title “Voyage” and the visuals we get in their music video suggest the voyage Stefan Storm and Oskar Gullstrand are taking us on is neither exclusively earthly or heavenly. Instead, it’s both. While “Nova” gives the feeling of space travel, “There Is Still Hope” definitely gives an earthly feeling with an amazingly stunning bridge of music which starts at 3:45.
Standout tracks: Nova/The Ruins of Rome/There Is Still Hope/Disappear
No. 7: Breathe Carolina, “Hell Is What You Make It”
Breathe Carolina have done it again. Hell Is What You Make It is another wonderfully energetic Screamo-Electro album from the American duo. Hell Is What You Make It is produced so much better than their other two albums and displays a sense of maturity to it. It’s safe to say these guys keep getting better and better while inching to stardom with every album. I sincerely hope they make it. One tip: Ditch the awful graphic designers that work with you… Breathe Carolina album covers are about as aesthetically pleasing as Rihanna’s forehead. That is to say, not good at all.
Standout tracks: Sweat It Out/Blackout/Gone So Long
No. 8: Austra, “Feel It Break”
Canadian group “Austra” snags the next spot with their excellent album “Feel It Break.” One might confuse the voice of lead singer Katie Stelmanis’ vocals with that of Florence Welch’s voice. Now, I know I’m going to take a lot of shit for that one, but they ARE similar and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. True, Katie Stelmanis can’t reach the notes Florence can and she can’t sustain a note like Florence, but she still has a graceful set of vocal chords on her that shouldn’t be taken lightly. Austra gives us a very artistic side to electronic music, which can so commonly get tossed to the side because it’s made with a keyboard or synthesizer instead of a real instrument. When will that attitude change? My argument is this… it takes more than just a great voice to be an artist. A great voice is a TALENT, not ART. Austra = ART.
Standout tracks: Lose It/Darken Her Horse/Energy
No. 9: 2NE1, “2nd Mini Album - EP”
Oh, 2NE1. When I’m in need of a good KPop record, 2NE1 delivers it like a delicious piping hot pizza. Let’s get down to business, “I Am The Best” is quite possibly the best song to come out of 2011. It has a thumping dance beat, kickass lyrics, great autotune and a middle eastern dance break. The girls promoted the shit out of this song and it really paid off. So many Americans now know who 2NE1 is. I hear my own personal enemy, will.i.am-an-idiot is working with them for their debut English album.. Lord, help us all!
Standout track: I Am The Best/Hate U/Ugly/Don’t Stop The Music
No. 10: Coldplay, “Mylo Xyloto”
Coldplay brushed aside the plagiarism claims that plagued their album “Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends” and released Mylo Xyloto… a classic Coldplay cut. Although not incredibly innovative, it is a step closer to a more anthemic coldplay that isn’t afraid of electronic elements. The album doesn’t really include that signature piano driven single, and I couldn’t be more pleased about that. I love when Chris Martin gets on his piano, but let’s change it up a little bit. I’ll give them major props for two additions to this album: Paradise and Princess of China Feat. Rihanna. These songs are so bold for Coldplay. One other note about this album is the wonderful graffiti artwork. I love it, and I think it fits the album perfectly.
Standout tracks: Paradise/Princess of China/Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall/Major Minor/It Hurts Like Heaven
No. 11: LIGHTS, “Siberia”
Another Canadian on my list! LIGHTS is an AMAZING leaps and bounds progression from her last album. I wasn’t a LIGHTS fan until Siberia. This album has it all… dubstep (as stated above) good angsty sweet vocals, clever lyrics and production. I’m thoroughly excited to find out what other goodies LIGHTS has up her sleeve for us.
Standout tracks: Flux and Flow/Banner/Toes/Timing Is Everything
No. 12: Ivy, “All Hours”
What do you listen to after a night of heavy drinking/partying? Or in my case, a wild night of watching episodes of 30 Rock back to back? You listen to IVY, of course. IVY: The band that delivers great relaxing yet captivating music. All Hours is the album we’ve been waiting for. Her honest and pure voice really makes the song “I Still Want You” come to life. If this song was anyone else’s, I’m more than sure it wouldn’t sound as great. It really needs that French sweet accent. Ah, IVY… I could fall asleep to that voice every night.
Standout tracks: Fascinated/I Still Want You/Distant Lights
No. 13: Adele, “21”
Ah, Adele. My old frenemy. Do I like you, or do I loathe you? A little of both because she never changes her sound. Let’s put this out there, so everyone is clear: I don’t (I repeat) don’t consider Adele an ARTIST. She is a talented SINGER, and even that is questionable at times because of her repeated habit of not performing certain notes live. She hasn’t ever displayed any kind of artistic merit vocally, lyrically or visually. Instead, she makes songs about things we’ve all been through so we as humans like them. 21 sounds like her debut album 19. There is no growth. In fact, the only thing that changed is the inclusion of “Super Hit Producers” like Ryan Tedder. The natural comeback to that statement from someone who likes Adele would be “she doesn’t hide behind gimmicks” but one has to remember, a gimmick to one person is a Picasso or a Dali to another. The greatest artists of our existence didn’t get to where they were by painting inside the lines… they were bold, eccentric and overdone. They shook things up, instead of staying inside a box. I like Adele, but if 24 (I have a feeling that will be her next album title) sounds like 21 and 19, I’m over her.
Standout tracks: Set Fire to the Rain/Rumor Has It/Rolling in the Deep
No. 14: Nicola Roberts, “Cinderella’s Eyes”
Former/Current member of the British girlgroup “Girls Aloud” released her first ever solo album this year. Out of every solo album ever released by a Girls Aloud, this is the best by far. This is the only solo album from one of the girls which displays sophistication AND fun. My hats off to Nicola. She truly did what her fellow group members couldn’t do.
Standout tracks: Beat of My Drum/Gladiator/Sticks + Stones
No. 15: Dev, “The Night The Sun Came Up”
When will this album finally hit America? It’s taken so long. It’s easy to compare DEV to someone like Ke$ha, in the sense that they both do “white girl rap.” But where Ke$ha fails is her serious lack of swag. DEV has that and then some. Her hit single “Dancing in the Dark” is an ass shaking saxophone driven sound under some cleverly written words. Time will tell if DEV hits it big in the states. Dancing in the Dark helped her but it takes more than just one song to make it, and The Night the Sun Came Up definitely has these tracks. Will her record label utilize them? That remains to be seen. Cherrytree Records has a tendency to be quite lame in that department.
Standout tracks: Breathe/Lightspeed/Dancing in the Dark/Perfect Match
No. 16: Britney Spears, “Femme Fatale”
Britney Spears released the natural follow up to her wonderful Blackout album from 2007. Oops, did I forget Circus? Well, that’s okay because everybody does. Blackout was the peak of her career as far as music goes, Circus was the natural step she had to take out of Crazytown, and Femme Fatale is the real business. It’s a pretty solid album as far as pop music goes, introducing dubstep to mainstream radio. It seems like everyone is doing that now, right? Femme Fatale suffers in the album artwork, but shines through the production. Max Martin isn’t known to produce anything less than a top ten hit. Everything he touches turns to gold. I’m not a huge Max Martin fan, but the man can produce a hit; that much, I’ll give him.
Standout tracks: Inside Out/Seal It With A Kiss/Hold It Against Me/Till The World Ends
No. 17: Kasabian, “Velociraptor!”
Kasabian is a personal favorite of mine when it comes to alternative rock bands. Their last album, West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum was one of my favorite albums from anyone to date. It would be hard to top it, and I’m sad to say Velociraptor didn’t… but I still can’t take away too much from this album, because it’s more than solid. It’s great, actually.
Standout tracks: Days Are Forgotten/I Hear Voices/Switchblade Smiles
No. 18: Owl City, “All Things Bright and Beautiful”
I think we all know the formula for an Owl City song: Make the lyrics about something a 5 year old would think about, sing them like a 19 year old emo boy and produce them like a 20-something would. This album is no different in that sense, but it does include bold new ideas like the track “Kamikaze” which does feature the 5 year old lyrics but the vocals are yelled and then muffled which create a nice progression and gives me hope that the next Owl City album will feature even more maturity.
Standout tracks: Kamikaze/Dreams Don’t Turn to Dust/Galaxies
No. 19: Foster the People, “Torches”
Who would’ve thought a track about a mall shooting could be so lighthearted and fun? Foster the People are definitely this year’s breakthrough act and for good reason. They make songs a person can dance to as well as hum along to in the car on the way to work.
Standout tracks: Pumped Up Kicks/Helena the Beat/Houdini
No. 20: Hellya, “Fatum.Sudba.Rok”
Hellya comes to us from Russia… yes, all the way over there. Fatum.Sudba.Rok is her debut album, available now on iTunes. Originally appearing in t.A.T.u.’s reality show “Podnebesnaya,” Hellya contributed the buzz track “Naidu” to the album “t.A.T.u. v Podnebesnaya.” It’s been many years since then, but Hellya is back with a team of creative people taking her places. The album opens on lead off single “Y lyudi vsyo tak pohozhe” which is an adrenaline filled march of uncertainty mixed with a sort of melancholy vibe. Hellya’s vocals often change from ultra sweet to serial killer, and that’s just how I like it. I want to be surprised, not bored. Hellya rises to that occasion with a vengeance.
Standout tracks: Y lyudi vsyo tak pohozhe/Opium&Morphium/PornoMania/Pustota
“It’s a Blondie kinda night… “Panic Of Girls””
Check-in to Blondie on GetGlue.com
I am listening to The Cataracs
“Ahhh! The Cataracs have a new song feat. DEV! Hollaback if you my homie. If ur not then get to know me. No snake but I might bite ya girl, half naked with a half white girl. Very poetic, lol. ”
Check-in to The Cataracs on GetGlue.com
So basically, we’ve worked on 2 songs for a new project within the past 3 months. 1 of them is already recorded and mastered. The other is currently being recorded. Both of them are different but they’re both awesome, naturally. Run and tell that, homeboy!
139 others are also listening to Lady Gaga on GetGlue.com
Kids of 88… My latest music obsession. I don’t wanna get too graphic, but if I could have sex with a song, “Feed The Birds” would be it. Just sayin…
I LOVE the music so much. I can’t even say enough good things about Kids of 88.

Well, that shit was boring! Lady Gaga as a man, Adele phoning in a half assed performance, Chris Brown peddling the same dance routine he’s done since 2006, Britney’s eyes looking slightly less drugged and Katy Perry looking like an idiot. Let’s start out with the performances:
BEST: Lady Gaga as Jo Calderone, “You and I”
Lady Gaga stayed in character throughout the night and performed an amazing opening number. This wouldn’t have been the best performance of the night if the other’s weren’t so bad. Why is this performance the best? Great LIVE vocals AND dancing.
Worst: Chris Brown, “Yeah 3X/Beautiful People”
Chris Brown tried to “shut the haters up” (and by “haters,” he means anyone who doesn’t like him because he beat the shit out of his then girlfriend, Rihanna) by lip syncing worse than Britney Spears at the 2007 VMA’s. Really, this shit was awful! Stop peddling the same dance routine you’ve done since 2006. This isn’t So You Think You Can Dance… and honestly, I don’t know why people talk about his dancing in general. It always looks THE SAME!
Okay: Beyonce, “Love On Top”
It was nice for what it was, but it wasn’t all that. It was kinda boring, but also kinda cute… kinda like her.
Honorable Mention: Young the Giant, “My Body”
This would’ve been my pick for Favorite Performance of the Night but it was too standard. I loved the performance in general, but it was kinda flat.
Adele kept showing off her manicure during her emotionless performance of “Someone Like You.” Anyone who says that was the best performance of the night was on crack. She just stood there, moving her hands back and forth with no emotion. Yes girl, we saw the manicure the first time. If she actually had some feeling in her voice or her movements, then I would’ve said “Wow, that was great!” but she didn’t, so I didn’t. I guess I should be happy she didn’t just sit down the entire time, à la “Rolling In The Deep”
Lil Wayne was boring as fuck. Kanye and Jay Z were… boring. Pitbull & Neyo were… well, boring. Bruno Mars performed Valerie, which was okay but I’m kinda tired of his face in general. That hair? Jo wears it better. Just sayin.
WTF were Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj wearing? Honestly, this is why I hate the Gaga effect… everyone wears weird shit now because they want to be different but no one (except the Lady herself) has a back story as to why they’re wearing it. Did you wake up and want a cube on your head, Katy Perry? Did you go to Toys R Us to accessorise your outfit, Nicki? You girls have no originality.
So, Katy Perry was the biggest loser of the night. She barely won anything and managed to make Kanye West look like a sane rational man when they won Best Collaboration. Was she drunk, high or just plain stupid? Either way, I approve of anything that makes her look more and more like a talentless hack. Jessie J performed Firework better than she does. That shit was embarrassing!
So yeah, it was very lackluster. Next year better be good.

Perfection might have been Natalia’s goal, and it might’ve been achieved as well, if it weren’t for a few additions to the US version of Kills’ debut release. Let’s start out with the ranking, because I hate when reviews wait until the end… the album received an average raiting of out 4.41, out of 5. With that said, I can confidently say that PERFECTIONIST is the best debut album since The Fame (Lady Gaga)
PERFECTIONIST is a 16 track collection of pop, power, emotion and thrill. Natalia Kills sits on her thrown as a dark pop princess. She proves songs don’t have to be about a club or drinking to make you wanna dance. I wish she wouldn’t rely so much on spoken word phrases, like “Lipstick, lies, tears, tragedy” in BREAK YOU HARD, “Sex, love, control, vanity” in MIRRORS, “Cash, cars, girls, boys” in NOTHING LASTS FOREVER and “Love, War, Lies, Money” in IF I WAS GOD. Get the point? There’s just too much of that. However, it’s still one of the best debut albums ever recorded. Even more so, it’s one of the best pop albums to date! Let’s go through the tracks one by one, shall we?
01-PERFECTION: I have to start out by saying that I’m not a fan of spoken album intros. PERFECTION also makes it seem like the album is a concept album, although it’s pretty safe to say that the album is not. (3.0)
02-WONDERLAND: There are a few records on this album that stand out, and this track is definitely one of them. Lyrically, it’s one of the best pop songs ever written throughout modern music. ”I’m not snow white, but I’m lost inside this forest. I’m not red riding hood, but I think the wolves have got me. Don’t want your stilleto’s, I’m not Cinderella. I don’t need a knight, so baby take off all your armor.” Pure, well… perfection. (5.0)
03-FREE (Feat. will.i.am): Oh dear, where do I even begin? Well, I’ll start out by saying that will.i.am’s half assed addition to the song was not needed, nor does it fit the rest of the album. For that matter, even the entire song FREE doesn’t fit. It’s too bad this is the track that actually says “PERFECTIONIST” in it, because it’s far from perfect. It’s quite shitty, actually. I’m gonna go with “boring” to be nice, though. (2.7)
04-KILL MY BOYFRIEND: When I first listened to this track, I felt kind of annoyed. ”Why does the music change so much?” kept echoing in my brain. After a few more listens, it hit me… the song’s psycho-style change fit the lyrics perfectly. Here’s a girl who likes the guy she’s with, but wants her old boyfriend. She doesn’t want to hurt his feelings, so she decides it’s better to kill him. Quite campy and cute, with a hint of evil manic madness. (4.6)
05-BREAK YOU HARD: I have nothing but great things to say about this song. The beat is outstanding. The lyrics are good, and the production (thanks to Theron Feemster) is great. One of the standout tracks, and should be a single. (5.0)
06-ZOMBIE: The first buzz-single we ever heard from Kills. It’s still a great song, but I could’ve done without it for the actual debut album. It’s just a little too old, and kind of out of place. Or maybe, that’s just me? (4.5)
07-LOVE IS A SUICIDE: Well, this is the song I was most excited to hear from the album. The melody and music are great. Great production, thanks to Fernando Garibay (Lady Gaga) but something is missing during the bridge that leads up the chorus. That would be my only complaint. Other than that, another stand out track from the album. (4.8)
08-MIRRORS: If this song was recorded by Rihanna, it would’ve been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 7 weeks. This is a prime example of why good songs plus a good image don’t always equal chart appeal. I’m going to blame Cherrytree Records for this, because Mirrors is definitely a #1 song. (5.0)
09-NOT IN LOVE: This track is what the PERFECTIONIST album is all about. Dark moody synths and a haunting chorus. Produced by Martin K., (Cherry Boom) [Lady Gaga, Space Cowboy] I have to hand it to him, the sound quality is off the hook. Love the outro. (5.0)
10-ACID ANNIE: I’m not a fan of this song. I don’t wanna say Lady Gaga owns the right to macabre dark messages left to police stations (Paparazzi video) but Natalia’s intro of “911, what is your emergency? …There’s been an accident!” sounds a little too familiar. It would’ve been smart to leave that out. In all fairness, it adds nothing to the song. Musically, it’s kinda good. Lyrically, kinda boring. Formatted, a little boring as well. The chorus takes you nowhere. (3.6)
11-SUPERFICIAL: This is the third upbeat song on the album, after FREE and KILL MY BOYFRIEND. It has great style, but parts of it sound a little too much like the synths used in BREAK YOU HARD. Although, I must say; I’m a sucker for any song that references Depeche Mode (…and Violator playin’ on repeat) (4.1)
12-BROKE: Love the beat, love the lyrics (If I had a dime for every single time I should’ve said goodbye, I’d be a millionaire. But I don’t, ‘cause you left me broke) has a great double meaning. Awesome vocals in this track, as well. (4.9)
13-HEAVEN: A real lyrical tear-jerker. The beat has an “old school jam” kinda vibe to it which should come off kind of dated, but the song reaches PERFECTION after the first chorus. From that verse on, including the rap, the song owns. (5.0)
14-NOTHING LASTS FOREVER: There’s no excuse for this song to not be a single. It has single written all over it. Produced by Jeff Bhasker, NOTHING LASTS FOREVER features a dark sexy dramatic vibe. Take out Billy Kraven, add someone new that’s going somewhere (possibly Kerli, Tokio Hotel frontman Bill K. or just use Natalia herself and make it a solo song) and it’ll be a smash. (5.0)
15-IF I WAS GOD: What would you change, if you were God? Natalia asks herself that very question in a hauntingly beautiful album closer… well, it should be the album closer. But the deluxe version (and let me say, it’s only worth it to buy the deluxe version, because the standard copy only has 10 tracks) closes with a superfalous bonus track. (4.6)
16-FREE: If we can’t get around FREE being on the album, at least take out the will.i.am failure and use this as the only version of FREE on the album… and while you’re at it, make it literally FREE to download, because there’s no need to buy this track by itself. (3.9)
Go to iTUNES (RIGHT NOW!) and buy PERFECTIONIST!
So, there you go…

Lena Katina (formerly of the Russian Pop Duo, t.A.T.u.) released her debut solo single NEVER FORGET (B-side STAY) on iTunes. Let me just say, it’s an amazing debut! NEVER FORGET seems like the natural follow up to t.A.T.u.’s 2nd studio album, DANGEROUS & MOVING. Much like t.A.T.u.’s fanbase, Lena’s new sound has matured. NEVER FORGET and STAY are far more self aware than most of t.A.T.u.’s work. I’m not suggesting that t.A.T.u.’s body of work was not important, as it was incredibly innovative and bold. What I am saying is that the t.A.T.u. project captured the teen years and early twenties of the brain while Lena’s new sound feels like the mid twenties and on.
One thing distinctively different about Lena’s new songs are the credits… Lena co-wrote both tracks. To be fair, the lyrics aren’t incredibly gripping, but the feeling is. One line which stands out (even enough to make the single booklet, available when you purchase the single on iTunes) is “Our moments together, I’ll keep them forever.” Perfectly worded.
Download the single. You won’t regret it. Also, pay close attention to the B-side, STAY. That song is as strong (if not stronger) than NEVER FORGET. It has a distinct European dance feel to it, which is only mellowed by the excellent guitar riff throughout the song. The only thing I’d change about STAY is the ending. It feels abrupt and forced. Other than that, it’ll make an excellent addition to the album.
So there ya go…
